Chocolate is part of almost every child’s basket of candy, and is an indulgence for most adults at least on some occasions. Research report tracks a developing perception for chocolate that shifts from kids’ candy or a subject of high-calorie dessert-like pardon, towards a food that has medically documented beneficial properties. Its changing status embodies a unique proposition that chocolate now presents as a food with health benefits, although in a qualified manner that requires explanation. It is a matter of common knowledge and is apparent even from general reading, that chocolate contraindicated for those who are on a diet to limit calories. It is completely off-limits for people who suffer from impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes. Five latest studies suggested that chocolate consumption has a positive influence on human health, with antioxidant, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic and anti-thrombotic effects as well as influence on insulin sensitivity, vascular endothelial function, and activation of nitric oxide. “A little chocolate is delightful. A lot is not.” Future studies should provide detailed information about different populations or different ethnic groups in other geographical locations and from different socioeconomic levels.
